You need to decide what industry you want to serve. To make money, you need to create values, targeting a subset of this industry. For the purpose of this discussion let’s say you are interested in the Creative Industry. If you Google the services in this industry, they are quite many, it includes design, publishing,
entertainment, music, cartoon, writing, acting, software development, so many sectors involved in creative industry. Now pick a sector from the creative industry, let’s say design and a subset of this, let’s say graphics.
So our product/service is Graphic Design which involves creation and editing of logos, banners, images etc. since you understand that your niche is the create industry, this is also your immediate market to target.
Now, your concern is to create exceptionally valuable graphics that will attract high paying customers. Only when your designs are able to stand the test of competitive market, you don’t have a business.
Create a brand
How would you like to be known in the creative graphic design business? Your brand is what you must work on next. You need to envision the kind of look you want and how you want people to feel able you and your business. This is the time to start dreaming; dream of the type of logo, name, color, tagline, presentation etc, you want.

Create your portfolio
The world of freelancing is a jungle of no mercy! As long as you want money, you must show you deserve it. Customers would want to know by seeing not just by hearing, the service you claimed you can offer. This is where having a good portfolio representing your actual works comes in.
Although it is difficult to have portfolio when you are just starting but you just have to create it somehow.
Pro bono jobs, offer free services and use it as your samples. The reason I said pro bono is, it gives you the opportunity to have someone neutral to judge your work, this gives you the need to put in your best to make it good and acceptable just like delivering to a paying customer.
