Some people resist changes more than others, there are times when most of us resist change for example when you are thinking of changing jobs or a career or leaving a relationship that has lost its lustre and gone sour. It can be hard to let go of what you know and step into the unknown.
Whereas others relish change and can’t wait for a new challenge, think of mountain climbers, explorers or athletes; but is there a part of their lives that even though they enjoy new challenges they resist change?
Often we hear people say that Britain isn’t like it used to be in a sorrowful way, well I’m afraid nothing stands still things move forward or go into decline. Think even of plants and nature.
Why is change resisted? I guess because the opposite of change is security. It is human nature to want our basic needs covered like shelter, food, connection, growth and avoidance of pain. Most people like some security to feel comfortable. So if we are planning a big change in our lives its good to build in as much security as we feel comfortable with, if we can.
Think of the stress index, where deaths, divorce and moving house or jobs rate highly on the scale and we are advised to limit several big changes in a year for the sake of our health and well-being. So if you are thinking of something major, plan it beforehand so that you become accustomed to the changes in your mind ahead of the action and reduce stress. Look forward to the event with enthusiasm not fear. Don’t worry unnecessarily think of change in a positive way.
